A recent investigation by Lead Safe Mama has uncovered alarming levels of heavy metals—including lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium—in many popular toothpaste brands. Out of 51 products tested, 90% contained lead, and nearly half had detectable mercury.
These contaminants were found even in children’s and “green” toothpaste brands. Ingredients like bentonite clay, hydroxyapatite, and calcium carbonate—often used for cleaning and remineralizing teeth—were identified as probable sources of contamination.
While none of the products exceeded federal FDA limits, several samples violated the stricter Washington state threshold of 1,000 ppb for lead.
As your trusted dental care provider, I encourage you to:
- Check ingredient labels for bentonite clay, hydroxyapatite, and calcium carbonate.
- Choose products from brands that have tested clean or are transparent about their sourcing.
